Bugatti reveals Veyron Super Sports

Land speed record car spawns 40 special production super Veyrons.

When the 987bhp Bugatti Veyron blasted onto the scene in 2005, few would have lamented the car’s lack of power. But Bugatti sees things a little differently. The French firm achieved a production car land speed record of 268mph this year with a thoroughly revised Super Sports Veyron which produced 1,184bhp. And now the firm has confirmed that the last 40 of the Veyron’s production run of 300 will be built to this configuration. The first five production Super Sports versions use the same black and orange colour scheme as the world record car, and all five have already been sold. The Super Sports models feature the same changes that allowed Bugatti to set a new world record. For full details, check out our gallery below.

1. Bugatti Veyron Super Sports front

The Super Sports sprints from 0-62mph in 2.5 seconds, 0-124mph in 7.3 seconds and 0-186mph in 16.7 seconds.

2. Bugatti Veyron Super Sports rear

SS uses racing-inspired dampers, longer-travel suspension springs and different anti-roll bars to increase stability.

3. Bugatti Veyron Super Sports side

Veyron’s 8.0-litre W16 engine remains unchanged, but larger turbos and intercoolers give SS more power.

4. Bugatti Veyron Super Sports rear

The seven-speed DSG gearbox shifts in 0.1 seconds and the SS brakes from 62-0mph in 31.4 metres thanks to its rear wing.

5. Bugatti Veyron Super Sports rear

Newly designed double rear diffuser improves downforce at speed, but necessitated a new exhaust.

6. Bugatti Veyron Super Sports roof

All SS models come with a lacquered carbon fibre body and carbon ceramic brakes, but it still tips the scales at 1,838kg.

7. Bugatti Veyron Super Sports roof vents

The fastest Veyron features an aerodynamic, elongated roof with integrated ducts to feed air to the engine.

8. Bugatti Veyron Super Sports sketch front vents

The SS has revised front air ducts which can be closed at speeds above 233mph for better aero efficiency.

9. Bugatti Veyron Super Sports sketch dashboard

Fuel consumption is a thirsty 12.2mpg while carbon dioxide emissions are a hefty 539g/km.

10. Bugatti Veyron Super Sports sketch interior

All Veyron Super Sports produce the same 1,184bhp and 1,500Nm as the record-breaking car.

11. Bugatti Veyron Super Sports sketch rear

Production SS models have a top speed limited to ‘just’ 258mph, 10mph slower than the record, to preserve tyres.

12. Bugatti Veyron Super Sports record breaker

The Veyron’s world record stands at 268mph, and the first five SS cars get the same black and orange livery.
